PAULINE  VIARDOT-GARCIA   Singer and Composer 1821-1910

This website was developed in 1999, under the direction of Prof. Jutta Schlegel and Prof. Dr. Beatrix Borchard, for a concert project at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin. The project began with plans for a CD-ROM about Pauline Viardot, designed by Julia Lindig and Betrix Borchard. The design was limited to black and white materials. Since there are no existing audio recordings of the singer, Pauline Viardot-Garcia, it was a challenge to create an 'image' of her life without the help of her voice.

Planning and programming of the website was developed in conjunction with the research project "Music and Gender on the Web", which was financed by the Innovation Initiative at the University of Paderborn.

In order to make up for the lack of audio recordings, a game was developed using recordings of other famous singers, such as Maria Callas, Janet Baker, Jochen Kowalski, and Andreas Scholl, among others, singing segments from 'Orpheus von Gluck.' Together with a detailed description of her voice, the user can get an idea of the singer's powerful presence during her lifetime.

The intellectual and artistic geniuses of her time met in the singer's numerous salons. Kings and princesses visited occasionally, to enjoy the musical festivities. Her acquaintances, such as George Sand, Frederic Chopin, Ivan Turgenjew, among others, are included on the website alongside the singer's lifetime and artistic achievements.
Julia Lindig was given special permission to digitalize photos, images, autographs, and collectibles of Pauline Viardot-Garcia in the private collection of Dr. Joachim Draheim. As a result, a virtual tour of the singer's house in Baden-Baden was integrated into the website.
